At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
